Proposal Background
After nearly a decade of vacancy, structural experts and the City of Los Angeles determined the Barry Building’s integrity is compromised and is susceptible to significant damage in the event of an earthquake. The building’s open-face design places it within the standards of the City’s Soft Story Retrofit Program and does not meet the Program’s requirements. Continuing to sit empty further exacerbates the risk of vandalism, loitering, and other public safety hazards associated with vacant buildings. The property owner decided to submit the application for the demolition permit in 2018.
Why is demolition the best option?
- The building’s design is doesn’t meet modern safety requirements.
- The process will only take 36 days.
- The proposal complies with all environmental standards.
Why should you get involved?
- Community pressure can ensure the proposal is approved.
- Once demolished, the future of the lot can be decided by the community.
- Neighborhood involvement is the only way to ensure transparency.
